Jeep VIN decoder
Jeep VINs changed when the brand became part of Fiat Chrysler and later Stellantis. Older Jeeps often start with 1J4 or 1J8, while most newer ones start with 1C4. The Gladiator pickup uses 1C6.
Enter a Jeep VIN to see the model, trim, engine and plant, plus recalls and owner complaints. It’s a quick way to make sure a used Wrangler or Grand Cherokee is the trim and engine the seller says it is.

Jeep manufacturer codes (WMI)
The first three characters of a Jeep VIN are its World Manufacturer Identifier. These are the ones you’re most likely to see on vehicles sold in the United States:
| VIN starts with | Meaning |
|---|---|
1C4 | Jeep SUVs built in the US (current range) |
1J4 | Jeep SUVs built in the US (older range) |
1J8 | Jeep SUVs built in the US (older range) |
1C6 | Jeep Gladiator pickups |
3C4 | Jeep models built in Mexico |
ZAC | Jeep models built in Italy |
Not sure what the rest of the characters mean? Our guide to what each digit in a VIN means walks through all 17, and the VIN year chart shows how to read the model year from the 10th character.
How to read a Jeep VIN
Old codes and new codes
Seeing 1J4 on an older Grand Cherokee and 1C4 on a newer one is normal. The manufacturer code changed with the company’s ownership, not because of anything about the vehicle.
Built outside the US
Some Jeeps come from abroad. 3C4 is used for models built in Mexico, such as some Compass models, and ZAC for models built in Italy, like the Renegade.
Trim matters for value
A Rubicon and a Sport Wrangler can look similar in photos but differ a lot in price. Decoding the VIN shows the trim and series Jeep reported, which is a good first check before you look at the car.
Before you buy a used Jeep: what to check with the VIN
Once you’ve decoded the VIN, these are the Jeep-specific things worth comparing against the listing.
Check the trim and 4x4 system
Jeep trims like Sport, Sahara and Rubicon come with different four-wheel-drive hardware. The Trim and Drive type rows tell you what the vehicle left the factory with.
Engine options
Wranglers and Grand Cherokees have been sold with four-cylinder, V6, V8 and plug-in hybrid power. The decoded engine and electrification rows settle which one you have.
Look at owner complaints
Because Jeeps are popular and often modified, the owner complaints section is a useful way to see which problems are common for a particular model year.
Where to find the VIN on a Jeep
Check the dashboard through the windshield on the driver’s side first, then the label on the driver’s door jamb. The VIN is also printed on the title, registration and insurance card. See all the places to look.
