Harley-Davidson VIN decoder
Almost every Harley-Davidson sold in the US since 1981 has a VIN starting with 1HD. The rest of the 17 characters tell you the model family, engine, model year and the plant that built it, which matters a lot on a brand where the same-looking bike can be worth very different money.
Enter the VIN below to see what NHTSA has on file for the bike, along with recalls and owner complaints for that model and year.

Harley-Davidson manufacturer codes (WMI)
The first three characters of the VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier. These are the ones you’re most likely to see on vehicles sold in the United States:
| VIN starts with | Meaning |
|---|---|
1HD | Harley-Davidson motorcycles built in the US |
5HD | Harley-Davidson (additional US range) |
MEG | Harley-Davidson models built in India |
Not sure what the rest of the characters mean? Our guide to what each digit in a VIN means walks through all 17, and the VIN year chart shows how to read the model year from the 10th character.
How to read a Harley-Davidson VIN
Model family is in the middle
Harley packs the model family and specific model into the middle of the VIN, so the decoder can usually tell a Softail from a Touring or Sportster model. That’s the first thing to check against the listing, because badges, tanks and seats are easy to swap.
The 11th character is the plant
For many years Harley used Y for York, Pennsylvania and K for the former Kansas City plant. If a seller tells you where a bike was built, the decoded plant confirms it.
Check the engine stamp too
On many Harleys, part of the VIN is also stamped on the engine case. If you’re buying, compare it with the frame VIN. A mismatch can mean a replaced engine, which isn’t always bad, but it should be explained and it affects value.
Before you buy a used Harley-Davidson: what to check with the VIN
Once you’ve decoded the VIN, these are the Harley-Davidson-specific things worth comparing against the listing.
Match the model to the badges
Tanks, seats and badges move easily between Harleys. Make sure the decoded model and engine match the bike, not just the paint.
Compare frame and engine numbers
Check the VIN stamp on the frame against any VIN stamp on the engine case. Ask for paperwork if they differ.
Look at the recall list
Read the recall summaries in the report and ask the seller for proof that open recalls were fixed by a dealer.
Where to find the VIN on a Harley-Davidson
On most Harleys the VIN is stamped on the right side of the steering head, the part of the frame the forks turn on. Many models also have a VIN sticker on the frame down tube. It’s also on the title and registration. See all the places to look.
Frequently asked questions
What does 1HD mean on a VIN?
1HD is Harley-Davidson’s manufacturer code for motorcycles built in the United States.
Can I find my Harley’s model from the VIN?
Usually, yes. Decode the VIN above and check the model and series rows. Harley encodes the model family in the middle of the VIN.
Does this work for Harleys built before 1981?
No. Bikes from before the 1981 model year used Harley’s older serial number systems, not the standard 17-character VIN.
Why does the decoder show fewer details than for a car?
Manufacturers report less detail to NHTSA for motorcycles than for cars. You’ll usually get the make, model, year, engine and plant.
